A Quiet Place for a Vacation

Just below Stratton Mountain, on a dead-end dirt road, next to a private 3/4 acre pond, is the The Cole Cabin. This is a warm, friendly, cozy dwelling. Some guests refer to it as a hobbit house, or -a house-boat, because there are so many small nooks crannys; the space is very efficiently utilized. It is built out of logs ,cut the old fashioned way, one by one in the woods and then transported to the site and placed one on top of the other and chinked. The Cabin is comfortably furnished with bedding, dishes, cutlery and utensils. Everything is provided except sheets, pillowcases and towels.

It is private and quiet. The side of the Cabin that faces the pond has a patio for barbecuing, and general outdoor relaxation. A Weber grill, picnic table with umbrella and a chairs are provided. It is a lovely spot for enjoying the day while reading a good book or just hanging out. The Cabin is a few steps from the pond.

Inside the Cabin

The one person stand-up kitchen has a stainless steel sink, dishwasher, electric range, coffee maker, microwave, toaster and a refrigerator. The log living room, with a view of the pond, has a brick fireplace with an Avalon fireplace insert. Gas heat is available when needed. For dining, there is a locally made free form pine slab table.

There are two bathrooms in the cabin, one in the master bedroom with a shower and a second split bathroom with a toilet in one room and across from it, an oversized shower room with a sink.

There are two sleeping areas on the first floor in the Cabin. There is a master bedroom with a queen-sized bed, ceiling fan and its own bath with shower and there is a sleeping nook with two double-sized bunk beds in the area leading from the living room to the master bedroom.

Upstairs is a play/get-away/storage space with an Alice-in-Wonderland style children's play space.

A Private Pond

The 3/4 acre pond offers refreshing swimming and recreational (catch and return) trout fishing. It is spring fed. A rowboat is provided for fun. The grassy banks of the pond provide safe and easy entry into the water and is a great place to enjoy the sun on a hot day. A lovely screened gazebo graces the far shore. The pond is shared by the Cole House, but otherwise is private.

Lots to Do Nearby

From the cabin, it is a pleasant hike or a short drive to a waterfall at Pikes Falls, a beautiful rocky place for diving, sun bathing or hiking as well as a cool dip. The water is very cold even in the late August. Within a few miles, up at the Stratton ski area or down in the valley, are good eating places, country auctions, fairs, antiques and within a half an hour's drive, concerts and summer theatre in Weston and Dorset. Manchester is outlet store heaven for the shoppers in your group. For a good day hike, take the Long Trail or the Appalchian Trail, which winds its way through the back of Stratton Mountain to Stratton Pond. There are many State Parks closeby including Jamaica State Park which has its own falls called Hamilton Falls. There are many streams and lakes in the area where you can put in a canoe or go fishing.

Nearby authentic Vermont attractions include farmers’markets in  Brattleboro, Jamaica and Weston, Dutton’s Farm Stands in Newfane and Manchester, the Brattleboro Food Coop (especially the cheese department), the Grafton Village Cheese Store on Route #30 in Brattleboro, artisanal cheese producers on the Vermont Cheese Trail and country stores in Jamaica (D & K’s Grocery) and Harmonyville (the Harmonyville Store).
